First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 446 pages; Description: viii, 446 p. : ill., maps ; 24 cm. Subject: World War, 1939-1945 -- Europe -- End. World War, 1939-1945 -- Social aspects -- Europe. Summary: Americans are justly proud of the role their country played in liberating Europe from Nazi tyranny, but Americans often overlook the wartime experiences of European people themselves--the very people for whom the war was fought. Here, historian William I. Hitchcock surveys the European continent from D-Day to the final battles of the war and the first few months of the peace, and shows that the liberation of Europe was both a military triumph and a human tragedy of epic proportions. This multinational history of liberation brings to light the interactions of soldiers and civilians, the experiences of noncombatants, and the trauma of displacement and loss amid unprecedented destruction. Today, with American soldiers once again waging wars of liberation in faraway lands, this book serves as a timely and sharp reminder of the terrible human toll exacted by even the most righteous of wars. 1 Kg.

In this book the author shows that the end of the Second World War in Europe was bloodier, messier and more complex than we would like to believe. The fore edge of the text block has some mottling to it. The D/j shows light shelf wear.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Liberation The Bitter Road to Freedom, Europe 1945-1950 Special Collection by William I. Hitchcock. Published by Faber in 2009. Hardcover. The traditional image of Europe in 1945 is of grateful civilians showering soldiers with flowers and dancing in the streets. In reality, liberation was an extraordinarily violent and chaotic process. Using first-hand accounts, Hitchcock describes the catastrophic effects of invasion on Northern France, Belgium and Holland, the huge civilian death tolls from indiscriminate bombing, with towns destroyed and crops burnt. He shows that the motives and behaviour of the Allied forces were far from noble. Collectible item in very fine condition.
