This book is a detailed account of the lives of people who once lived in an isolated Spanish-speaking village of the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado. Olivama Salazar de Valdez records her recollections experienced there during a window of time in the Twenties and Thirties of the Twentieth Century. Farm practices, daily life, cultural aspects and spiritual mat- ters are among the various topics discussed. There are occasions of joy, sadness and humor in the true stories recorded. The book also includes historical facts, which contributed to the events that led to the settlement of this village near the confluence of two rivers, the Rio Grande and Rio de Conejos. The book should be of special interest to those who have a heritage connection to Los Sauces, and to others who would like to gain a better understanding of what life was like in such a place at that time. Olivama Salazar left Los Sauces in 1939 as a young woman of twenty-one to go work and attend school in Denver, Colorado where she lived for ten years. She returned to the San Luis Valley in 1949, and has spent most of her adult life living in La Jara, Colorado as a farmwife. She and her late husband, Bonifacio Valdez, raised two children. After her husband's death she has been involved in church volunteer work, traveling, helping her son with his business and enjoying her grandchildren. Dolores Valdez de Pong was born in Alamosa, Colorado and raised in La Jara, Colorado. A graduate of Centauri High School, she earned a B.S. degree from Colorado State University and a M.A. from University of New Mexico. She has been a teacher in Santa Fe Public Schools for 29 years, and is a children's playwright. She has composed over 70 children's songs for teaching the culture, history and geography of New Mexico in Spanish.
