Item Description: Springfield, Mass.: Published by Gurdon Bill, 1866/, 1866. Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881) was an American novelist and poet. Not long after President Lincoln's assassination, Holland went to Illinois in order to meet with people who had known the former president. He then wrote the earliest full-scale biography of Lincoln. A tremendous success, Holland's book provided American readers with personal information about Lincoln's early life, some of which included the most famous and enduring of the "Lincoln stories." For example, from Holland's work, the reader would learn about Lincoln making restitution for a damaged book, how he earned his first silver dollar while working as a railsplitter, how he was kicked in the head by a millhorse, and his wrestling match with John Armstrong. Holland was one of the first writers to claim that Lincoln had always disagreed with slavery and had planned consistently for the emancipation of slaves. He also depicted Lincoln as an "eminently Christian" president, a point that later historians debated. Octavo. 544, + [2, publisher's ads] pp. Engraved frontisportrait and three additional engravings (bust of Lincoln, "The Early Home," and "Home of Lincoln"), all with tissue guards. Brown half calf with marbled boards; spine with raised bands and black morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Marbled edges. Binding extremities rubbed with some light wear and scuffing to spine. Light foxing and offsetting from plates to tissue guards and occasionally to text. Intermittent light foxing and browning, as usual. Old pencil signature of previous owner on front flyleaf. A very good copy. First edition. Bookseller Inventory # 16221
