Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. An early biography of Lincoln published shortly after his assassination. This set bears the ownership bookplate of the Library Association of Dark Harbor, ME and indicates that it was donated by Mrs. E.P. Kinnicutt, [the Kinnicutt family was important in New England financial cirles and with the American Antiquarian Society. The set was given by his widow to the Dark Harbor Library (an affluent enclave on an island off the coast of Maine) and they bear the bookplate and very discrete marks supporting that. Dark Harbor occupies about 1/4 of the island and is largely occupied by summer 'cottages', the rest of the island is occupied by largely year-around residents. Owners of the 'cottagers' created the Dark Harbor library, separate from the public library on the island and the cottage families (largely Boston Brahmin) donated books to be shared amongst themselves (there was also, for a period, a fund raised among them for buying new material. Noted flaw notwithstanding, overall a handsome copy in a binding that is often found rather impaired. Minor shelf/edge wear, ownership plate at front pastedown, signature at ffep, 'early home' had been loose at gutter and shows early tape remounting, ghosting of prints on tissue guards, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Publishers brown cloth, beveled edges, gilt lettering, in blind decorative elements, brown endpapers, frontispiece, tissue guards. 8vo. 544pp. Illus. (b/w plates).
