Octavo, contemporary glazed green muslin, recently rebacked in polished quarter sheep, neat bookplate, bit age tanned and foxed as usual, back cover and fly leaf scored, good. The 30 page biographical and critical essay is by Whittier, and this is its sole printinig until it was issued in a collection of biographical essays over a century later, in the 1950's . It stands as one of Whittier's earliest appearances in print and is an outstanding example of his ability as a literary critic and editor of a fellow poet. BAL 1332 and BAL 21678. First edition.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This copy professionally rebound in attractive green cloth. No title labels. Page edges gilt. Binding nice and tight; page edges perfectly clean and square. New endpapers. No date on the title page, but an early owner has helpfully jotted '1832' in blue pencil at the bottom. Copyright pages dated 1832. Author's name underlined in blue pencil. The word 'Gardiner' pencilled in under the 'G' in the titles, as well. 228 pages. A few blue tics in the margins here and there, mostly in the Sketch of the Life at the start, showing an enthusiastic early reader, scarcely detracts from appear of this edition. Some inoffensive foxing and fading, but overall impression is quite nice. Whittier was not yet 25 years old when he published this volume; this is his second book.
