Jane Taylor (23 September 1783 ? 13 April 1824) was an English poet and novelist best known for the lyrics of the widely known "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star". The sisters Jane and Ann Taylor and their authorship of various works have often been confused, partly because their early ones were published together. Ann Taylor's son, Josiah Gilbert, wrote in her biography, "Two little poems ? 'My Mother,' and 'Twinkle, twinkle, little Star' ? are perhaps more frequently quoted than any; the first, a lyric of life, was by Ann, the second, of nature, by Jane; and they illustrate this difference between the sisters." Kate Greenaway (17 March 1846 ? 6 November 1901) was an English Victorian artist and writer, known for her children?s book illustrations. She received her education in graphic design and art between 1858 and 1871 from the Finsbury School of Art, the South Kensington School of Art, the Heatherley School of Art, and the Slade School of Fine Art. Her career began with designing for the burgeoning greetings card market, producing Christmas and Valentine?s cards. In 1879, wood-block engraver and printer Edmund Evans printed Under the Window, an instant best-seller, which established her reputation. Her collaboration with Evans continued throughout the 1880s and 1890s. The depictions of children in imaginary 18th-century costumes in a Queen Anne style were extremely popular in England and internationally, sparking the Kate Greenaway style. Within a few years of the publication of Under the Window, Ref ZZZ 1.

Decorative Hard Back. Condition: Good. Greenaway, Kate Greenaway (illustrator). First Edition. 64 pages. Condition Decorative hardback binding fair, some dirt, top left some loss of decoration. Contents mostly very good, with finger marks to a number of pages. No inscriptions, All the illustrations are in colour by Kate Greenaway, 64 pages, most with illustrations, but not all, about 38 illustrations with humans & about 18 small, mostly flowers. From a quick net check, it seems like this undated edition by Routledge was the first edition, editions by Warne & others came later, it seems Routledge published the first edition and in 1883, yet some dealers list theirs as earlier or publisher being the first, but I prefer to believe institutions like worldcat & BL. Size: 15 x 23cm Approx.
