About this Item: Frederick A. Stokes, New York, 1900. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Author (illustrator). 1st Edition. FIRST EVER U.S. APPEARANCE of BANNERMAN'S LITTLE BLACK SAMBO in the U.S. in FIRST EDITION / FIRST STATE +++ FIRST PRINTING of 1903/4 SECOND, LARGER EDITION ! ____________________________- 1. FIRST AMERCIAN EDITION / FIRST STATE, 1ST U.S. APPEARANCE of "The STORY Of LITTLE BLACK SAMBO"!! Published by Frederick Stokes, New York, by contract authority of Grant Richards of London in late 1900*. The 1ST U.S. COMPANY to publish BANNERMAN'S LITTLE BLACK SAMBO ! This is the Original Small Format, Dumpy Style, and the VERY FIRST EDITION in FIRST PRINTING/STATE** with Images of SAMBO on BOTH FRONT & REAR COVERS. TRUE FIRST STATE as well, with lettering in light blue to match Sambo's pants** -- in Tan Buckram Cloth binder (Red cloth binder is third state -- later 1902/3 printing!) ________________________________________ * FIRST STATE -- Printed on one side of the paper with each page of text facing a full page color illustration and with the preface explaining the Dumpy Book series. Per Yuill (p.3), "by 1900 Little Black Sambo had been published in the U.S. by Stokes. who had purchased the rights from Grant Richards. No remuneration went to Bannerman." * Note: There are no dates in these Original American Black Sambo editions, because Helen Bannerman had sold the Publishing rights to Sambo in England to Grant Richards, who promptly proceeded to not give her any royalties when the book took off in sales. So she refused to give her permission, as the author, to any copyright in the U.S. for Richards or Stokes! It was never copyrighted in the States -- thus the numerous Pirated Editions beginning as early as 1905. **According to Barton, The Pictus Orbis Sambo, pages 116-118, the first U.S. edition had the title and author lettering on the covers in pale blue, matching the color of Sambo's pants in the illustrations on the two boards. The second issue (1901) has the title in black as only change. & the third issue (1902/3) has a red cloth spine, as opposed to a tan buckram cloth spine in the first and second issues.** __________________________________ Thus, This TRUE FIRST PRINTING, FIRST STATE BUCKRAM Bound is a SOLID EXAMPLE, Complete in 56 numbered pages (did not include blank reverses in count) with all 27 Color Plates present. Some rubbing on edges & tip rounding, slight scuffing and soiling, binder tight with no loose pages, some light margin soiling only on a few pages. No Names, Marks or Damage!! A RARE FIRST EDITION TITLE -- in TRUE FIRST PRINTING / FIRST STATE!! ****************************************** 2. 1903/4 FIRST AMERICAN EDITION, FIRST LARGER FORMAT VERSION, Published by STOKES, NEW YORK. (Technically referred to as Second Edition, FIRST STATE -- Larger format; Only front cover Illustrated; with first appearance of Sambo in Black Oval; Pages still printed on Obverse only.) VERY NICE EXAMPLE of the FIRST PRINTING of The Second Cover Version, enlarged somewhat from the Original 1900 format (16 mo), with first appearance of Sambo in an Oval Medallion on Front Cover Only. VERY FIRST PRINTING (Tan Buckram Cloth) of the Second 1903/4 Version with Pages still Printed one-sided with reverse of pages blank (Later Printings are on Both Sides). Very Nice Condition, with slight edge/corner wear. Interior Complete with original end papers (slightly tanned) with 56 numbered pages as well. NO NAMES, MARKS OR DAMAGE, Binder tight. This is a VERY SOLID EXAMPLE, Complete in 56 numbered pages with all Color Plates present. Very little wear. Interior Remarkably Tight & Clean, with No Names, Marks or Damage!! Also, in this series, Bannerman is never directly attributed the work, but rather the titles are .by the author of "the Story of Little Black Sambo", or later titles in later tales. In this tale, Bannerman continues her central theme of Children being menaced by Wild, Dangerous Animals of the Jungle. This one is about a little Orphan who is nearly eaten by a "Mugger" - name used for a Crocodile there - who tricks it into eating her wicked caretaker, Black Noggy, instead!Book is Very Good, some dusting and soiling, sunned spine, very little wear. The cook quickly Popped a Kettle on for a head, drew facial feature son it and put her bonnet back on!!
