Hardcover. Condition: Fair. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR. An oversize hardcover book with a pictorial front cover and beige cloth spine. POOR CONDITION. The spine is torn and tattered, leaving the boards weakly attached. The boards themselves are rubbed along the edges and spotted with dampstains, some of which have faintly bled through to the page corners. Small, spotty brown stains on the pages as well, but text otherwise unmarked. A damaged, fragile old book that must be handled gently. Inscribed by Wightman on the front free endpaper to an Edward Berge (possibly the American sculptor, but we cannot say for certain). Francis P. Wightman was primarily a children's book illustrator, perhaps best known for illustrating THE LAST EGYPTIAN by L. Frank Baum. This rare book, written and illustrated by Wightman, is a collection of songs and rhymes reflecting the often offensive black American stereotypes of its day, particularly in its use of dialect. Measures approx. 12.7" x 9.8".
