Et pourtant, des questions restent sans réponse, certains témoins ont disparu avec leurs secrets. Tel est le cas d'André Diethelm, qui pendant treize ans fut un des hommes de confiance du général. Son nom n'est connu que des spécialistes de l'histoire de la France libre. Avant de devenir le confident du général, André Diethelm, normalien, héros de la Guerre de 14-18, inspecteur des Finances, a notamment été envoyé en Indochine française. Directeur financier des usines Renault, il a ensuite géré une compagnie d'assurances avant d'être happé par la politique : directeur de cabinet de Georges Mandel, il assiste en direct à l'effondrement de la IIIe République. À Bordeaux, où le gouvernement s'est replié, il croise un général encore inconnu, Charles de Gaulle. Indigné par la collaboration, André Diethelm le rejoint à Londres. Aussitôt chargé de l'Intérieur dans le premier Comité de libération nationale, il ne quittera plus le général. Témoin des moments de découragement, il fut le confident et le compagnon des moments difficiles (pendant la guerre mais aussi après la " retraite " en 1946). Parmi les premiers animateurs du RPF, il siège au Conseil de la République et à l'Assemblée, où il préside le groupe gaulliste, tout en travaillant sans relâche au retour du général. Mais, décédé prématurément en 1954, André Diethelm n'y assista pas. De Gaulle quitte exceptionnellement sa retraite de Colombey-les-Deux-Églises pour lui rendre un dernier hommage : " Je ne crois pas qu'il existe de compagnon plus fidèle, ni de commis d'une conscience plus haute ", écrira-t-il dans ses Mémoires. Homme de l'ombre, discret jusqu'à l'effacement, André Diethelm n'a laissé ni mémoires, ni archives. Sa vie apporte toutefois un éclairage passionnant sur la Première Guerre mondiale, l'entre-deux-guerres, la colonisation, la défaite de juin 1940, l'arrivée au pouvoir de Pétain, les débuts de la collaboration, l'étonnante aventure de la France libre et la IVe République.
