First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: near fine. First Edition. Octavo, 355pp. A crisp, clean copy, about fine, with a very thin ding to the fore-edge of the page block. In a near fine dust jacket, gently worn at the crown and rubbed on the rear panel, but bright and well-preserved. A curious inscription appears on both the front and rear paste-downs, partly concealed by the jacket flaps: "I stole this book from C. L. Dellums." Dellums was an African-American labor activist who helped to found the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. He also partnered with A. Philip Randolph to pressure Franklin Roosevelt to open all of the war industrial production facilities to African-American workers, which was a successful effort. Though the Index does not reference Dellums by name, there are several passages on the significance of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, which was the first major public effort by mostly Black workers to unionize. A pleasing association.
