Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. First Printing Thus. Zebulon Montgomery Pike is best known for his two western exp[editions in the period 1805-1807. It was during the second journey in 1806 that the small detachment of army regulars, which Pike commanded, discovered and investigated, but did not ascend, the tremendous mountains which today bears his name -- Pike's Peak in Colorado. It was also during this expedition that PIke and his party were captured by the Spaniards who accused him of spying. The author discusses this event in detail, filling in the gaps in Pike's long and noble adventurer. Original edition published by University of Oklahoma in 1949. 240 pages including index. Illustrations. Fabulous copy.

Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Book is in near fine condition with light foxing to inside cover and end pages. The DJ is worn at the tips of the spine with pieces missing and rubbed along the edges. Protected in a mylar cover to prevent additional wear. Not price clipped. Inscribed "To Dear Snyder - with sincere best wishes. W. E. Hollon 10-1-49" Pike was one of the early explorers sent by the federal government in the early 1800. Between 1805-1807 he made two explorations along the southern routes. He and his party were captured by Mexicans and held in Santa Fe. Upon his return to US territory, he was investigated on suspicion of having been involved with General James Wilkinson and Aaron Burr in the infamous 'Wilkinson-Burr conspiracy." Although no verdict of guilt or innocence was ever reached, Pike continued to serve in the military, rising to the rank of brigadier general. He served at various military outposts, engaged in a number of bitterly fought Indian fights and was finally killed in 1813 the Battle of York during the War of 1812. Despite the browning and light foxing described above, this is a great biography of an early explorer and signed copies are quite scarce. Signed by Author(s).
