Item Description: Heritage Reprints [1953], New York, 1953. Later printing. New York: Heritage Reprints, [1953]. 507, [1] pages, plus a number of double-sided plates (a few color, the rest sepia). Additional black and white illustrations in the text. Original pictorial boards. [24.2 cm.] Lacking the dust jacket. Small abrasion near base of spine, light wear to spine ends and tiny chip at base, thus not quite very good, but sound, clean, and unmarked. Later printing. WARM INSCRIPTION SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, on the front free endpaper. It reads: "To Jan Mostowski, who knows and, I believe, loves this story of Vincent, the first book I ever wrote. My affectionate best, Irving Stone, July (no!), April 19, 1983." Irving also signs the book on the title page. Jan Stanley Mostowski (1915-2011) designed the window displays at Brentano's famous bookstore on Fifth Avenue, New York City, for many years. He thereby became acquainted with some of the most notable authors of his day, who knew him as "The Baron," and amassed an impressive collection of signed first editions. His heirs sold his library at auction in 2012, however much of the original collection was not included, having been destroyed by a flood several decades ago. Bookseller Inventory # 0000502

Signed, Limited Edition. Signed by Irving Stone on the third free end paper. First Edition Thus. Includes the rather scarce 22-page "Notes from the Editors", which accompanied this edition in its original shipment. Octavo, 512 pp., illustrations by Howard Rogers, commissioned for this edition. Full rich brown leather, gilt decorated and imprinted, spine panels rib divided, All Edges Gilt, deep maroon moire endpapers, with matching satin page-marker ribbon. Franklin's as-always lavish binding, in a limited signed edition of Stone's 1934 first major publication, the biographical novel 'Lie Down in Darkness'. Paper is 60-pound Franklin Library '1854' Cream, typeface is 11-point Bodoni Book, gilt is 22 karat. The Franklin Library, doing what they did best. As New; pristine and flawless. As bright, tight and immaculate as it was on its first day in 1981; please note that the deep maroon endpapers, have, at the front, developed a wine-red perimeter color, a not-unpleasing type of fade that apparently happens to this specific Franklin title. With the author's 'A Special Message to Subscribers from Irving Stone', written for this limited edition, and, of course, the separate 'Notes from the Editors', a very desirable example. See scans.
