The DeMoss Family Lyric Bards were a family of singers and musicians who entertained people throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe for over 60 years. The family legacy began with James M. DeMoss, who was born in Iowa in 1837. He was raised by devout Christian parents, and his mother taught him to sing at a young age. He joined the United Brethren Church and began teaching music at the age of 16. In college, he studied music and religion, and a few years later began to preach. He married Elizabeth A. Bonebrake in 1858. The DeMoss family moved to Oregon in 1872, and James began to organize musical groups. He formed the DeMoss Family Quartet in 1875, which consisted of himself, his wife, and their two children, Henry and Lizzie. The quartet quickly became popular, and they began to travel throughout the West, performing at churches, schools, and community events. In 1885, the DeMoss family added two more children to the group, Minnie and George. The group was renamed the DeMoss Family Lyric Bards, and they continued to tour and perform for many years. They were known for their beautiful harmonies and their lively stage presence. The DeMoss Family Lyric Bards disbanded in the early 1940s, but their legacy lives on. They are considered one of the most popular and influential family music groups in American history. The book "Sweet Oregon: The DeMoss Family Lyric Bards - The West's Favorite Entertainers" tells the story of the DeMoss family and their musical legacy. The book is full of photographs and stories, and it provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of this talented family.
