(Hardcover, 1954 ). (1954) 1955 1st US edition. 8vo (135 x 210mm). Ppx,197. B/w photograph plates. Mottled brown boards, spine titled in black, black tiger's head to upper board. Slight browning & wear - lacks dust-wrapper. Laid in is a photograph of Corbett's grave in Nyeri. This is Jim Corbett's account of his pursuit of the Temple Tiger and is followed by accounts of the maneaters of Muktesar, Panar, Chuka and Talla Des. "This is the last of Colonel Corbett's books on his unique and thrilling hunting experiences in India, which concludes the narrative of his adventures with tigers begun in the famous Man-Eaters of Kumaon. It does more than maintain the high standard of that enthralling classic, for Jim Corbett kept his best story of all for the long concluding chapter in this volume, telling, in The Talla Des Man-Eater, how he went out on what he feared might be a fatal last test of skill and endurance. As always, he writes with an acute awareness of all jungle sights and sounds, his words charged with a great love of humanity, and of birds and animals. His calm and straightforward modesty serves only to heighten the excitement and suspense of these experiences, in which time and again he risked his life to rid the Indian people of dangerous man-eaters." .

Orange Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Raymond Sheppard (illustrator). First English Edition. Sound decent orange cloth hardcover in dark orange pictorial DJ. States "Published in India, 1944, First Printed in England, 1946". This is the scarce first British edition with no mention of "Book Club" anywhere, so definitely not a book club edition. Map endpapers, brown line illus on apricot paper, matching DJ paper colour, the DJ is quite edgeworn with a flappy triangle at base of front panel and a triangular chip missing at spine top. Front panel displays well and most titling present on spine save for "ett" of author-name. Fits reasonably tightly and remains servicable. Name on fly, pages clean and binding solid, all plates in good order, 4 in total. The frontis has some browning in the corner at rear, the front is unaffected. Wartime economy paper is actually quite reasonable quality. Size: 12mo.
