412, [4] pp. 16,5x13 cm. In contemporary binding. Rubbed and bumped, soiling and foxing occasionally, small colored pencil not on t.p., stamps of Soviet moving library for self-education on t.p. and page with table of contents. First Russian edition. One of 5000 copies. Very rare. The Russian adaptation of the novel "Manhattan Transfer" (1925) by John Dos Passos was undertaken by Soviet Jewish translator Valentin Smetanich (pseud. Stenich; 1897-1938) who didn't hide his negative attitude towards Soviet rule; he couldn't escape execution in the Great Purge. Considered to be one of Dos Passos' most important works, "Manhattan Transfer" included experimental stream-of-consciousness techniques. They were partly inspired by Soviet avant-garde films directed by Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov. Introducing of this novel for Soviet readers became the real start of Dos Passos' popularity in the early Soviet Union. 'Three Soldiers' was translated earlier, but it was "Manhattan Transfer" that was reprinted several times and led other his works to the Russian market. Worldcat shows copies located in Universities of Virginia and Tulsa, Amherst College, NYPL.
