La famille, naguère, se complétait de la fille, Maya, fierté de tous, partie étudier au Canada, où, crime impardonnable, elle s'est mariée, rompant l'engagement qui la liait à son fiancé indien. Muré dans sa rancoeur, blessé dans son orgueil, Sripathi a rompu tous liens avec elle. La tragédie s'abat un matin, annoncée par un coup de téléphone : Maya et son mari viennent de se tuer dans un accident de voiture. Ils laissent une petite fille de sept ans, dont Sripathi et Nirmala vont avoir la garde. Une enfant en pleine détresse, transplantée dans un monde étranger, mais qui est peut-être la seule à pouvoir sauver du désespoir ce Vieil Homme qu'elle refuse d'appeler son grand-père. « Souviens-toi, » dit Nirmala à son mari, «Ravana, était un grand roi, musicien, savant. Mais ce n'était pas un héros. Il avait un trop gros ego. Comme toi. Un héros est un homme humble. » C'est cette marche douloureuse vers l'humilité, entreprise par Sripathi, qu'Anita Rau Badami nous raconte avec chaleur et tendresse, une bonne dose d'ironie aussi.
