8vo. viii, [2], 435, [1] pp. Blue-green ribbed publisher's cloth, gilt lettering on spine (slight shelfwear, rubbing), still a NF copy. First Pirret & Co. edition of this sweeping Progressive Era novel focused on a young woman's social and emotional struggles while growing up in an apple orchard operation in Western Washington. Higginson (1862-1940), who was one of the first American women novelists born West of the Mississippi, explores how Mariella copes with resenting the back breaking work required of women in the agrarian Pacific Northwest, social restrictions, and trying to determine her own path towards marriage, often against the societal norms. Higginson's poetry and over 100 short stories often touch on themes of of women necessarily being required to marry to achieve economic stability, which although sometimes gained was often rarely bearable, and this novel discusses intimately the marital clashes and struggles between mothers and daughters, mothers and sons, and spouses. She launched her career in March, 1890 with an article in West Shore magazine arguing that early marriage was more of a problem for women, than divorce. Although printed originally by Macmillan four times, and then again by the job printer Pirret, early printings are surprisingly uncommon.
