Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Wilhelm Reich's classic study is a unique contribution to the understanding of one of the crucial phenomena of our times - fascism. Reich firmly repudiates the concept that fascism is the ideology or action of a single individual or nationality, or of any ethnic or political group. He also denies a purely socio-economic explanation as advanced by Marxian ideologists. He understands fascism as the expression of irrational character structure of the average human being whose primary biological needs and impulses have been suppressed for thousands of years. The social function of this suppression and the crucial role played in it by the authoritarian family and the church are carefully analysed. Reich shows how every form of organised mysticism, including fascism, relies on the unsatisfied orgastic longing of the masses. The only authorised edition, translated from the original German. Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. In this classic study, Reich provides unique insight into the phenomenon of fascism, which continues to ravage the international community in ways great and small. Drawing on his medical experiences with men and women of various classes, races, nations, and religious beliefs, Reich refutes the still generally self notion that fascism is a specific characteristic of certain nationalities or a political party of ideology that is imposed on innocent people by means of force or political maneuvers. "Fascism is only the organised political expression of the structure of the average man's character. It is basic emotional attitude of the suppressed man of our authoritarian machine civilization and its mechanistic-mystical conception of life." Responsibility for the elimination of fascism thus rests with the masses of average people who might otherwise support and champion it.

8 8-1/2x11 sheets, stapled between paper covers. Somewhat bent at corners, o/w VG. Reich speaks of "three different layers of biophyschic sructure;" the outer layer being restrained, polite, compassionate and conscientious, the inner layer--under favorable conditions--honest, industrious, cooperative , loving, and also "rationally" hating. The problem comes in the middle layer, which he equates with the Freudian unconscious--cruel, sadistic, lascivious, predatory and envious. He sees liberalism as representing the outer layer, all genuine revolutionary art and science as stemming from the deep layer, and fascism as representing the middle layer.
