Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A long-lost story for children by the author of "Frankenstein", written in 1820, but never before seen or published. In November 1997, "The Times" announced that the story - known about but believed to have been destoryed - had in fact been discovered in Tuscany. The story was written for the 11-year-old daughter of Lady Mountcashell, a close friend of Mary and her husband Percy Shelley during their exile in Italy. The story is about a boy who runs away from his presumed parents, is adopted by an old fisherman and lives in a cottage near Torquay. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 12mo (tall). Quarter brown paper with light brown paper boards, gold lettering to spine. x, 179 p.p. Dust jacket lightly bumped at extremities. Near fine overall. In the fall of 1997, in a palazzo in the Tuscan hills north of Florence, a small booklet sewn into paper covers turned up in a long-unopened crate of old letters and other documents. It bore the title Maurice and inscription: "For Laurette from her friend Mrs Shelley." Investigation proved it to be a story written by Mary Shelley. Written two years after he great gothic novel Frankenstein, Maurice dates from a period when Shelley, still only 22, was deeply sunk in depression. Claire Tomalin was personally involved in the authentication of the rediscovered manuscript. She here contributes a comprehensive and fascinating introduction that explores the literary and psychological importance of the story and investigates the hitherto obscure histories of the two extraordinary families whose lives it touched.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 8vo. Quarter dark brown paper, light brown paper boards. x, 179 pp. B&W illustrations. Spine tilted. Very light bumping and toning to extremities of dust jacket. Fine overall. Written two years after her great gothic novel, Maurice dates from a period when Mary Shelley, still only twenty-two, was deeply sunk in depression. She eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley at sixteen, had borne him four children and seen three of them die. Thus, though Maurice is basically a charming moral tale written for a child - the daughter of a close friend - it betrays a vein of melancholy, beginning with a funeral and concerning a boy who has lost his parents. Even the happy ending has a sad twist.
