[Excerpt from Introduction] In his treatise On painting, Leon Battista Alberri, the architect and art historian who gave a scientific rationale to Brunelleschi's perspective inventions, wrote that painting must have been invented by Narcissus, who saw his image reflected in the spring. Or else it began, even before Zeusis began painting animals, as self-portrait. More than four and a half centuries later, Maurice Denis, the nabis painter, wrote: "The subject of the painter is within himself. All art lies in representing oneself".If this is true, Meira Yedidsion could be seen as essentially an autobiographical painter. Her work is nothing less than a "self-portrait" , as she has revealed herself over the years, or more correctly, as she has continued to make her own choices and undergo the decisions of fate or chance - in a word "existing". Her paintings, like her sculptures, are only a representation of her inner self, at the various levels of her psychic life, according to the deep springs of her personality. The word existing is nor used casually. Meira Yedidsion is in fact an existentialist painter, but existentialism is only one aspect - even though the most visible one - under which she reveals and expresses herself. In fact her whole road develops along two lines which are parallel, despite being antithetic: The line of being (Sein, in Heidegger?slanguage), and the line of being present (Dasein), or being in the world, existing, becoming. Being and being present, being and existing, being and time, thought and form, identity and difference, fullness of meaning and absence of meaning, light and shade, life and death, confusion and anguish: these are the bipolar terms through which her human and artistic path is expressed. Time is the substance from which man is made; true being is being for death, art is the visible form, the thinkable thought of death: this is what Heidegger teaches. But while Meira. Yedidsion "falls" in time as a human being, as an artist she "falls" in space rather than time. "I have fallen through space" could mean paraphrasing the title of the latest book of Cioran. Moreover, the author of Being and time ^ also teaches that the proper environment for art is space (Art and space).
