Last preface page is detached but remains present. Text block edges to side and bottom look rough cut. Pages are mildly tanned throughout. Severe cracking to gutters causing boards and binding to be loose. However, boards & pages throughout remain attached. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Visible tanning & crushing to spine. Minor splits causing fraying to cloth at spine ends. Gilt lettering remains bright and clear to front board.

No ownership marks present. Text is free of notes and marks. Binding tight and solid. The 'Memoirs' are the work of Courtilz De Sandra, an extremely prolific and imaginative writer. Born at Montargis in 1644, he became a captain in the Regiment de Champagne, and later in life was a prisoner in the Bastille for 9 years. Nearly all his works claim to be authentic memoirs of some well known character of his day. The 'Memoirs' are a masterpiece. Alexandre Dumas recognized it as such, and from these pages come the material and inspiration for his immortal 'Three Musketeers'. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.

In three volumes, all bound in matching half leather bindings by Stikeman & Co. Green morocco spine and corners over marbled boards. Boards scuffed and corners bumped. Hinges very rubbed. Top & tail of spines carefully strengthened. Each spine with 5 raised bands, dulled gilt titles and decoration. Marbled endpapers. Deckle-edged pages. Small binder's stamp to front endpaper: "Bound By Stikeman & Co., For Charles Scribners Sons". Each volume with the original blue cloth covers (gilt fleur de lys design) bound at the end. Clean text throughout all three volumes. Volume I: 'The Cadet; with a portrait frontispiece with tissue guard of D'Artagnan. pp.xvi /pp. 508 ; Volume II: 'The Lieutenant'.
