Bryan (1860-1925) was a politician, and served as Secretary of State. He is better known for leading the prosecution in the Scopes Trial (also called the "Monkey Trial") at which Clarence Darrow was the attorney for the defense of teaching Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Matthew Harrison Brady's character in the play, and later motion picture, *Inherit the Wind*, was based on Bryan.
