XX [From dust jacket flaps] This large and lavishly illustrated volume is a thorough study and documentation of the indigenous craft of pottery-making in Mexico. The story of the transformation of native clay into both utilitarian objects for every-day use and works of art will provide insights into this rapidly disappearing tradition for potters and collectors alike. The book begins with an historical overview of the clay tradition as it has existed for centuries?from pre-Conquest times to the present. The next chapter is devoted to the most traditional of all pottery forms, the olla, which is shown in all of its variations and uses. The chapter following, on the makinq of market pottery, outlines the general methods used by potters all over México including the digging of clay, forming and decorative techniques, and various firing procedures. The first section concludes with a chapter on the market potter, describing the social and economic context of market pottery as it affects the life of one family. The second section of the book is a photo essay and documentation of the four major pottery-producing centers of Mexico: the states of Guanajuato, Michoacan, Mexico, and Guerrero. For each of these areas, Edson covers the villages where the pottery is produced, typical shapes, types of vessels and decoration employed, notes on the indigenous techniques, and locations of the markets selling the ware. The flavor of the market as well as the beauty of the individual pieces is amply documented in a gallery of photographs which accompany each chapter. MEXICAN MARKET POTTERY will provide a wealth of information and inspiration for potters, teachers, and collectors. In addition, this book will prove an invaluable guide for the visitor to Mexico who is interested in finding the best examples of this indigenous tradition. XX Gary F. Edson received his B.F.A. in sculpture from Kansas City Art Institute and his M.F.A. in ceramics from Tulane University. Presently, he is an Associate Professor of Art at the Herron School of Art, Indianapolis, Indiana, where he teaches ceramics. A former Peace Corps volunteer in South America, Edson has lectured, taught, and worked as a professional potter throughout his varied career. In addition, he has written numerous articles for Ceramics Monthly magazine. His own work has been widely shown, including several one-man exhibitions at Orleans Gallery, New Orleans; Editions Limited Gallery, Indianapolis; Stewart-Richard Gallery, San Antonio; and group exhibitions at American House, New York; Dryer Gallery, Houston; Downtown Gallery, New Orleans; and Herron Gallery, Indianapolis.
