Best (1895 1985) was a noted railroad historian, writer, photographer, and one of the top sound engineers in the motion picture industry. Best collected over 130,000 railroad photographs, negatives, blueprints and other records one of the largest collections ever assembled. After his death, his widow, Harriet, arranged for it to go to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. Best wrote over a dozen books, as well as numerous articles on railroad history.

Second printing, hardcover, has a lean to the binding, slight bumps to spine ends and corners, very light sunning to the spine with a touch of fading to cover edges, minor toning to page edges, and a previous owner's plate to back of first free endpage, otherwise a solid, tight VG copy in a price-clipped Near VG dust jacket, which has bumps with shallow chips and tears to spine ends and corners, an interior tape repair to tail of front hinge, light edgewear with a crease between two tears at the head of front cover, slight sunning to spine and cover edges, and a short scrape to front fold. Jacket is wrapped in a removable Mylar cover.
