Im Wald herrscht gerade ein eifersüchtiger Streit zwischen dem Elfenkönig Oberon und seiner Gattin Titania. Ihr Zwist hat selbst die Ordnung der Natur durcheinander gebracht. Um Titania zu bestrafen, lässt sich Oberon von Puck, einem koboldhaften Elf, eine Wunderblume bringen. Ihr Zaubersaft, Schlafenden ins Auge geträufelt, macht den Erwachenden in jede Kreatur, die er zuerst erblickt, wie toll verliebt. Zunächst werden die beiden athenischen Liebespaare durch Puck, der Demetrius im Auftrag Oberons in Helena verliebt machen soll und dem aber dabei eine Verwechslung unterläuft, völlig in Verwirrung gebracht. Demetrius und Lysander verfolgen nun Helena mit ihrer Liebe, während die zuvor so heftig umworbene Hermia allein dasteht. Helena fühlt sich verspottet, Hermia verraten, die beiden Mädchen beschimpfen einander, und die Männer beginnen zu kämpfen. Inzwischen proben Handwerker auf einer Waldlichtung ein Schauspiel, das sie zur Hochzeit bei Hof aufführen wollen. Puck zaubert dem Weber Zettel einen Eselskopf, in den sich die erwachende Titania kraft der Wunderblume leidenschaftlich verliebt. Von Puck geneckt, irren die anderen Liebespaare, einander suchend und verfolgend, durch den Wald. Doch mit dem anbrechenden Morgen zerrinnt der nächtliche Traum. Im von Oberon heraufbeschworenen Zauberschlaf werden die Verwirrten von Oberon aus der Verzauberung gelöst, außer Demetrius, der zu Helena findet.
