First Edition
Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Weitzel, F. L. (Frontispiece) (illustrator). Second Edition. Rare edition in original wrapper, two months after first printing in October, 1909. Fancy volume and price considering the short sliced chapters concerning the evils of industry and monopolization. Interestingly, after just two months and this second printing, the frontis is present, but the luxurious seven additional plates from first printing are absent from this second. Described by Rideout as "500 pages of Harold Bell Wright on a soapbox." Brower's work was a direct attack on the moral and cultural depredations of capitalism. Reminds the reader of vacuous drama that would be an early 1900's soap. Set in a foundry which attacks slavish labor and monopolistic crony capitalism, but, in turn promoting socialism for the misguided beaten down and abused masses. Revolves around a crusading minister who is driven from his pulpit by parishioners deriving income from property used for vice. Contents fails to consider possibility of creating small, medium, or even large enterprises, individual acheivement and merit, freedom to earn for one's self and be personally responsible for personal success, thereby providing incentive. An example of early twentieth century sublte but ultimately radical & proletarian pulp, dreams of a perfect world aka utopia which always ends in dystopian squalor, labor & reform movements which lead to the pressure cooker group think collective led around by the nose of charlatans. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" Tall.
