"Stereotype edition" (first published in St. Louis in 1820, then reprinted in Cincinnati in 1825, 1827, and 1830 and annually there, 1832-1841). Oblong 4to. 200, 40 pp. Shape-note notation for three or four voices. All of the early editions are uncommon in trade. American Imprints 49573. Morgan 3380. This edition more widely held than other earlier ones (OCLC locates 17 copies). A previous owner's inscription on the front endpaper admonishes users to "please take good care of this book it is as precious as gold or diamonds." Pencil ownership signature on verso. Rear endpaper lacking. This copy was well used, the printed front and rear boards cracked vertically and repaired with clear tape, the printed paper text on the boards considerably eroded, the spine reinforced with cloth tape, scattered foxing and spotting.

Oblong 4to. 200, 40 pp. Shape-note notation for three or four voices. All of the early editions are uncommon in trade. OCLC locates 11 copies of this edition (UCLA, Chicago Public, Manchester College, New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, Boston Public, Appalachian State, Duke, Moravian Music Foundation, Princeton, Cincinnati/Hamilton County Public, Ransom Center). Original roan-backed printed boards (severely rubbed, corners and edges eroded). Spine ends chipped, front joint separated, lacking all front endpapers to title page, title page worn and soiled, with one repair to verso, claiming several letters in the title. Still a good copy. (2486).
