Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. First Edition. [light shelfwear, spine very slightly turned, slight age-toning to edges of text block; the jacket is a bit edgeworn, with various small nicks and tears, some surface-scuffing, and a bit of paper loss at both ends of the spine]. (B&W photographs by John Swope) The hit play (which ran for almost three years in its original Broadway engagement), based on the 1946 novel of the same name by Heggen, which was derived from his wartime experience in the U.S. Navy. The play starred Henry Fonda, who repeated the role in the 1955 film version, which was co-directed by John Ford and Mervyn LeRoy (officially), with Joshua Logan brought in late in the production to re-shoot selected scenes (uncredited). Heggen himself was overwhelmed by the play's success, suffered a crippling bout of writer's block, and tragically died (either accidentally or by suicide) just a little over a year into the play's original run.

Thomas Heggen (23 December 1918 19 May 1949) was an American author best known for his 1946 novel Mister Roberts and its adaptations to stage and screen. Despite mixed reviews, it sold over one million copies and made Heggen the toast of the New York literary scene, followed by a lucrative offer to adapt the book for the Broadway stage. With Henry Fonda in the title role, the 1948 stage version of Mister Roberts was a smash. E-010; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
First Edition. Glass rings on front cover; very good in a chipped dust jacket. Presentation copy, very warmly inscribed by Heggen, 'For Nancy, because you are such a wonderful girl, and because I love you dearly. Tom. May 24, 1948.' Inscribed copies are very scarce; the author committed suicide less than a year later, an acute sufferer of writer's block. The successful play starred Henry Fonda in the title role, which he repeated seven years later in the John Ford - Mervyn LeRoy film, participated in by Logan. Contemporary war films are, perhaps justifiably, bloody and cynical, but this play and the subsequent film were produced just after this country saved the world from the greatest evil threat it had known. This play and its close, roughly contemporary relative, Stalag 17, shared robust democratic values, camaraderie, and a typically American disdain for tyranny, domestic and foreign. It appears romantic, idealistic, perhaps even innocent today, but this is attributable to the pride in recent victory, as well as in optimism for the future. If most of the characters today appear too good to be true, it's because they were good; revisionist history aside, this was good vs. evil, including the evil within. The good guys won. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.
