L'auteur utilise tout du long le vouvoiement pour décrire le voyage d'un homme dans le train Paris-Rome, alors qu'il compte rejoindre sa maîtresse. On suit tout son cheminement de pensée, toutes ses réflexions et ses multiples décisions, lesquelles changent au fur et à mesure du trajet. On voit à quel point il lui est difficile de savoir ce qu'il désire, à quel point le temps qui passe trop lentement l'empêche de rester sur un choix de vie. L'utilisation du vouvoiement oblige le lecteur à s'identifier au personnage, à être concerné par les idées qui lui viennent sans cesse. La modification peut être considéré comme un bon exemple du mouvement littéraire du Nouveau roman, mouvement des années 1950 en France, refusant de donner une place trop primordiale à l'intrigue et s'intéressant aussi à tout ce qui entoure l'histoire principale. 312 + (1) pag.
