The film was written by Dubliner Neil Jordan and David Leland, and directed by Jordan. It was produced by HandMade Films and stars Bob Hoskins, Cathy Tyson, and Michael Caine. Bob Hoskins was praised for his performance and was awarded the Golden Globe Award, BAFTA Award, Prix d'interprétation masculine at the Cannes Film Festival, and other awards. Despite this heavy acclaim, he lost the Academy Award for Best Actor to Paul Newman in The Color of Money.

Vintage borderless photograph from the 1986 film, showing director Jordan and star Hoskins together on location. With manuscript annotations on the verso. Hoskins stars as a recently released ex-con hired to drive a high class escort from job to job, slowly falling in love with her as he does, which leads trouble for them both. Hoskins won Best Actor at Cannes, where the film was also nominated for the Palme d'Or, and was nominated for an Academy Award, losing to Paul Newman in "The Color of Money."
