This edition contains a short life of the author. A worn copy with heavy chipping to the spine and some wrinkling and edgewear to the cover boards. 32mo. (10.7cm x 6.9cm). Attractively bound in contemporary black morocco with red, yellow, green and blue leather onlays and decoration in gilt. All edges gilt. Illustrated with an engraved portrait frontispiece of Fenelon and an additional decorative plate depicting urns and foliage. Contemporary bookseller's ticket for Philp & Evans of 29 Clare St., Bristol to the front pastedown. 127pp. A very good copy, the binding square and secure with a little cracking to the front hinge, rubbing to the extremities of the boards and some wear to the leather onlays. The contents with some spotting to the decorative engraved plate and light scattered foxing to the preliminary pages are otherwise in very good order. An uncommon pocket-sized edition of this devotional work translated from the French of the Catholic archbishop, theologian, poet and writer François Fenelon, published by the well-known William Darton. Only one institutional copy is recorded globally by WorldCat (University of York).
