Hardcover. Condition: g. First edition. Quarto. XLI, [3], 524, XII, 566, [4], 919, [1]pp. Original olive cloth (1st vol.) and black cloth (Vol. II) with gold lettering on spines. Original printed wrappers (Vol. III). This set contains the first 3 volumes of this monumental anthology of the history of Hungarian Jews published before WWII. The other 2 volumes were published after the war which nearly annihilated Hungary's Jewish population. Indeed, of the original 825,000 Jews before the war, 260,000 Hungarian Jews survived and 565,000 perished. This work is an example of a Jewish attempt to practice the monumentalist style of historiography popular in Germany in the 19th century, which attempted to gather every relevant document on a given topic from government archives as a first step to analyzing them and creating a master narrative. Moderate rubbing and soiling on bindings. Gold lettering of first volume faded. Lower front corners slightly bumped (not affecting pages). Front hinge of second volume slightly starting. Wrappers of third volume age-toned and partly creased along edges. Very minor and sporadic age-toning along paper margin. Text in Hungarian, German and Latin. Bindings in overall good, wrappers in fair, interior in good+ condition.
