Ein Roman, der sich gut als Pendant zu dem anderthalb Jahrzehnte früher entstandenen "Mörder" lesen lässt, denn Spencer Ashby sieht sich unversehens mit einer ganzen Latte von Verdächtigungen konfrontiert, die niemand wirklich ausspricht, die aber sukzessive zu seiner gesellschaftlichen Isolierung führen, bis sogar seine Frau Christine nicht mehr an ihn glaubt. Ashby ist Lehrer an einer höheren Privatschule in einem kleinen Nest im Norden Amerikas. Er hat spät geheiratet, weniger aus Liebe denn aus einem Bedürfnis nach Kameradschaft -- irgendwann musste es schließlich ein Ende haben mit dem Leben im Bungalow der unverheirateten Lehrer. Seit einem Monat wohnt Bella im Gästezimmer der Ashbys, die Tochter einer Schulfreundin Christines, für ihren Mann kaum der Aufmerksamkeit wert. Obwohl sie bereits achtzehn und recht attraktiv ist, sehen sich beide von der Aufmerksamkeit überrascht, die die ortsansässige Männlichkeit ihr entgegenbringt. Bella wird eines Morgens erwürgt in ihrem Zimmer aufgefunden, nach einem Abend, den Spencer Ashby allein zu Hause verbracht hatte. Er selbst sieht die Angelegenheit anfangs recht unbeteiligt, überzeugt davon, dass auch die anderen seiner Sichtweise folgen werden. Dass er sich darin täuscht, wird keinen Simenon-Leser überraschen, auch nicht der etwas abrupte Schluss, der Ashbys Schicksal besiegelt. Ein eher durchschnittliches Buch, für Abhängige trotzdem zu empfehlen, schließlich gibt's andernorts kaum ein derart durchschlagendes Gebräu aus Gleichgültigkeit und Melancholie.
