This has been true for so long that one is apt to think that Mother Goose herself is as old as Time, or even older than she is. And yet, while her name may have belonged to Charlemagne's mother, who was known as Queen Goosefoot, Mother Goose probably did not make her appearance in English until 1765, just about two hundred years ago. Earlier she had been known in French, in a collection by the famous French author of fairy tales, Charles Perrault, and Sir Walter Scott is said to have traced her origins to a very remote time in Italy. Of one thing there can be no doubt: Wherever Mother Goose came from, she came to stay.
