First Edition
Condition: Very Good. First edition. 25 cm; 344 pages, including 200 half-tone photo illustrations by the author. In original blue gilt-stamped cloth with stylized Art Nouveau decorated cover. Spine ends a bit worn, but very good overall. First book by the pioneering Dickerson, who was the first curator of herpetology at the American Museum of Natural History and later editor of the institution's journal, "Natural History." The volume offered here, illustrated with Dickerson's own photographs, is considered a model of scientific rigor balanced with plain descriptive language. The Wikipedia article about Dickerson cites contemporary reviews stating, "This work must, simply on the ground of merit, be placed in the front rank of nature studies. Not only is its descriptive matter free from everything like pedantry and professionalism, but the illustrations fairly make the study eloquent." The book was issued in two bindings, one plain blue cloth titled in gilt, and one with deluxe gilt decoration, offered here.
