First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: UNSPECIFIED. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). Signed and inscribed by the author, Victor Bockris, on the title page. The inscription reads: 'To Ann, with memories of some extraordinary times we have shared over the years in N.Y.C., Victor Bockris, N.Y.C., May 6, 1998.' I'm not sure who 'Ann' is but this book was owned by George Plimpton (you may want to google 'In His League: Being George Plimpton' an excellent article in The Nation). Plimpton did not write his name in this book. On the front flap at the top there is a short poem from Muhammad Ali (The man who has no imagination/Stands on earth/He has no wings/He cannot fly). Below that it reads ' Just off Highway 61 in northern Pennsylvania, up the dirt drive of a wooded hill lay a place called Fighter's Heaven. This was once the training camp of the "greatest of all times". From early '73 through the summer of '74 Victor Bockris visited Muhammad Ali, while Ali was preparing for his epic battle in Zaire to regain the World Heavyweight crown from the fearsome George Foreman. Bockris, who was later to write about people like William Burroughs, Andy Warhol and Lou Reed, was less interested in his subject's boxing career and ambitions than in his extraordinary gifts as a poet, preacher and performer. As Muhammad Ali said himself of this book, "These are some of the things I don't reveal to the public too much".' And below that, also on the front flap, is one blurb and it is from George Plimpton. It reads 'Ali is the one athlete of these times who will stir imaginations a century from now, and this record of a period in his camp will make that eminently understandable. A fascinating document.' You may or may not know that George Plimpton, being George Plimpton, got into the ring and sparred for three rounds with boxing greats Archie Moore and Sugar Ray Robinson, while on assignment for Sports Illustrated. Happily, no one has sparred with this very handsome book. As you can see from the photos, the black covers are exceptionally clean and show little to no wear, a very tiny dent at the bottom edge of the rear cover. The page edges are very clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. The book is square, not slanted, and very solidly bound from cover to cover. There are great many photographs throughout. I didn't see any soiling on any of the pages in the book. They are of a glossy composition and have light toning at their margins. The pages are in excellent condition, no creasing, no dogeared corners, no markings, no attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. This book's only imperfection is a narrow vertical line of darkening at the inside margin of the rear inside cover just adjacent to the juncture with the rear end paper. The binding there is perfectly fine. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It's in very nice, very solid, shape. There are no tears. There is no soiling. There is a tiny crinkle at the top edge of the spine. The flaps are in very good condition. There's just a little bit of toning off their top edges. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It is protected by a fitted cover. Victor Bockris is an English-born, U.S. based author, primarily of biographies of artists, writers, and musicians. He has written about Lou Reed (and The Velvet Underground), Andy Warhol, Keith Richards, William S. Burroughs, Terry Southern, Blondie, Patti Smith, and Muhammad Ali. He also helped write the autobiographies of John Cale and Bebe Buell. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where both his parents worked, in 1971. While still in Philadelphia, he founded Telegraph Books. He moved to New York City in 1973 and became an associate of Warhol and Burroughs. He worked for Warhol at the Factory and published many pieces in Warhol's magazine Interview, often in collaboration with Andrew Wylie, now best known as a literary agent.'. Inscribed by Author(s).
