Book
Green Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Second Edition. Undated but 1920. Second edition. xxiv, 404pp., photogravure frontispiece, one photogravure portrait, 134 black and white illustrations (mostly on plates and some folding), and 7 other maps and plans. Top edge gilt. Katherine Maria Routledge (1866-1935) was an English archaeologist and anthropologist who, in 1914, initiated and carried out much of the first true survey of Easter Island. She departed the island in August 1915, returning home via Pitcairn and San Francisco, and published her findings in this book. It includes information of its cultural and ethnographical problems, and contains many photographs of the island's statues, and is probably the earliest photographic survey undertaken. The work also contains much information on the places encountered along the expedition's route: the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Tahiti, Hawaiian Islands, The Panama, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Bermuda, etc. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board and a gold illustration on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards and wear to the titling on the spine. There is a small indentation near the fore edge of the front board and the spine ends are bumped with a little damage to the cloth. The book has been rebacked and recased, probably within the last twenty-five or so years, and as a result the contents are tight and secure. It has new white endpapers. The pages are clean with some scattered foxing. The foxing is mostly light although the photogravure frontispiece and portrait, together with their tissue-guards, are more heavily affected. The fore edge of the text block also shows some foxing and on a few pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. There is a little mis-folding to the plate facing page 166 and this has left the top edge protruding a little from the top edge of the text block. There is a personal ex-libris label on the top edge of the front free endpaper. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy and scarce volume and extra postage will apply.
