Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Books are still among the most important cultural achievements of humanity. Their invention was as important as the Internet: for the first time, a mass transfer of information became possible. Education, science, research, but also entertainment was based on a new revolutionary basis. Books are changing society until today. The technical possibilities of mass printing led to a radical increase in titles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Nevertheless, the conditions were still very different than today: Who wrote a book at that time, often wrote a life's work. This is reflected in the high quality of old books. Unfortunately, books age. Paper is not made for eternity. Therefore, we have made it our mission to preserve the book of knowledge of humanity and to make old books available in high quality at low prices 828 pp. Englisch.

Manners Customs and Cannibal Practices of the South Sea Islanders. 2 vols. London: Hurst Chance and Co. 1829. Facs. reprint Amsterdam 1972. 8vo. Orig. cloth. With 2 folding engraved frontispieces one of which is coloured a folding map coloured in outline a full-page plate and 1 text-illust. Errata-page opp. p. lxxviii in Vol. I. Bibliotheca Australiana Nos. 53-54. NOTE: This voyage finally solved the mystery of the loss of La Perouse and his Expedition. Forty years after the disappearance of La Perouse Peter Dillon a sandalwood trader called at the Solomons and when a silver sword guard was brought out suspected he had stumbled on the solution. He returned to India persuaded the government of Bengal to sponsor an expedition and sailed to the Solomons via Tasmania New Zealand and Tonga. At Vanikoro he conducted a careful investigation among the natives regarding the shipwrecks and was able to obtain many relics including a portion of the stern of the Boussole ships' bells stamped 'Bazin m' a fait' monogrammed silver metal fragments and mill stones known to have been aboard. One native depicted on a folding plate had a glass piece from a thermometer in his nose. On the successful receipt of his report and this material in France Dillon was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour his expenses were defrayed and he was granted a pension. Dillon described as 'eccentric quick of temper and with a vivid vocabulary' Dunmore includes a scathing examination of the legal system of Tasmania and New South Wales. Aboard the ship had been a Dr. Robert Tytler with whom relations were so strained that Dillon was accused of insanity and the doctor in turn arrested for attempts to incite mutiny; and upon arrival in Hobartown assault charges were placed against Dillon and the ship sequestered. Over 40 pages relate to the questionable legal proceedings between judge and governor and the appendix reprints articles from Australian and Indian sources on Dillon's treatment in what he called a 'land of corruption and injustice'.

First Edition
Two volumes, octavo, plates (two folding, one coloured), and a folding map; plates crisp, in half green morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, spine banded and gilt. First edition. Forty years after the French explorer first disappeared, Peter Dillon, a sandalwood trader, called at the Solomons; when a silver sword guard was shown to him, he suspected that he might have accidentally discovered the solution of a mystery that had tormented the French for so long. He returned to India and persuaded the government of Bengal to sponsor an expedition. At Vanikoro he found many relics including a portion of the stern of the Boussole, ships' bells stamped 'Bazin m'a fait', monogrammed silver, metal fragments and mill stones known to have been aboard. One native had a glass piece from a thermometer in his nose. Dillon was made a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur, his expenses defrayed and granted a pension. His book was commercially successful, appearing in English and French editions promptly and eventually in a number of translations. Although Captain Peter Dillon is best known for his role in finding the wreck of La Pérouse's two vessels, the account also shows a passing interest in the voyages of the Bounty, and of the Pandora, and, especially in the region of the island of Rothuma, and gives detailed notes on the charting done by Captain Edwards and published on an Arrowsmith chart. .

To Ascertain the Actual Fate of La PÃ Â rouse's Expedition Interspersed with Accounts of the Religion Manners Customs and Cannibal Practices of the South Sea Islanders.London: Hurst Chance and Co. 1829. Two octavo volumes entirely uncut in original boards with printed paper title-labels to spines Boards a little bumped/rubbed; slight soiling to front board of Vol. I. Each volume preserved in a navy quarter oasis folding solander case with gilt lettering to spines. Publisher's advertisements at the front of Vol. I and errata-page opp. p. lxxviii in Vol. I. A particularly fine first edition set of a very scarce work. It befell Irishman Peter Dillon c.1785-1847 a South Sea trader in his words "a son of the sea" p. 43 to at long last solve the mystery of the disappearance of La PÃ Â rouse and the ships La Boussole and L'Astrolobe. It was some forty years since the ill-fated Pacific expedition weighed anchor in Botany Bay never to be seen or heard from again. The year was 1826 and Peter Dillon en route from Valparaiso to Pondicherry aboard his ship the St. Patrick decided to stop in at Tucopia Tikopia in the Solomon Islands to visit an old acquaintance. When a silver sword-guard "of French manufacture" was exchanged at the island Dillon suspected that it might belong to the missing French expedition. He learned that the inhabitants were in possession of many such items which they had acquired from the neighbouring Malicolo/Mannicolo Vanikoro islands. The inhabitants of Vanikoro Dillon was told had acquired the items from two large ships that had been wrecked there. Dillon hastened to Vanikoro though was unable to land due to contrary weather diminishing provisions and a leaky boat. Thus he sailed on to Calcutta sword-guard a ring made from a spoon and glass beads in hand where he successfully petitioned the Government of Bengal to sponsor an expedition to Vanikoro. Dillon returned to the Solomons towards the end of 1827 following a troublesome voyage during which Dillon charged the ship's surgeon Dr. Tytler with mutiny and arrested him which included stops in Hobart where Dillon was briefly imprisoned for assaulting the ship's surgeon New Zealand Tonga and Rotuma. At Tikopia and Vanikoro Dillon gathered intelligence visited the reef where the ships were wrecked and procured numerous relics from the wrecks some bearing inscriptions and royal arms. Upon his arrival in France Dillon was received by the King Charles X who thanked him and made him a Chevalier of the LÃ Â gion d'Honneur in recognition of his efforts. The relics were placed in the Louvre Howgego 2004 p. 168.
