Book First Edition
Paperback. Condition: Fair. First Edition. First edition in chipped wraps, cloth taped spine. Fair.Text tanned at edges. Ă?â?°tienne Ă?â?°mile Marie Boutroux (1845 Ă¢â?¬â?? 1921) was an eminent 19th century French philosopher of science and religion, and an historian of philosophy. He was a firm opponent of materialism in science. He was a spiritual philosopher who defended the idea that religion and science are compatible at a time when the power of science was rising inexorably. His work is overshadowed in the English-speaking world by that of the more celebrated Henri Bergson.

First Edition
Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering. 218pp. Very good. Mild edgewear. A tight and nice first edition with an interesting autograph twist: Front flyleaf bears the ownership signature of P.R. Vessie, a Connecticut neurologist who made a name for himself researching Huntington's Disease and publishing the influential 1932 journal article "On the transmission of Huntington's chorea for 300 years." He served on the staff of the Gowanda State Hospital in Gowanda, New York, and this mild ex-library copy bears several inkstamps from this institution. Very uncommon.
