4to., viii, 299pp., 274 colour & b/w illustrations, notes and index, orig. cloth gilt. A fine clean copy in a practically fine bright dustwrapper. The author explores the changing image of America as it has evolved in the European mind over the last four centuries. The book draws upon a vast material - much of it never known in America - to show how the landscapes of the New World, its flora and fauna, its peoples and their customs, have been seen by European artists from the early explorations to the present day. Hundreds of reproductions of art works are included, from the woodcut illustrations for Colombus's and Vespucci's letters and the often vivid and beautiful figures of men and animals on early sixteenth-century maps, to John White's water-colours done on the spot at Raleigh's first Virginia colony, to Tiepolo's fantastic allegory of America on the ceiling of the Archbishop's palace in Wurzburg, to Picasso's cubist Buffalo Bill. These are accompanied by a rich and varied literary background: Montaigne, Shakespeare, Blake, Byron, Goethe, Keats, Karl Marx, down to Hitler's favorite author, Karl May, and his Red Indian stories.

Please feel free to ask for particulars and/or additional photographs. . Living in Asolo near Venice, Honour and his life partner John Fleming began a highly productive writing and publishing partnership, in which Fleming managed the business side of their enterprise and Honour wrote the books. They were commissioned by publisher Allen Lane to edit the Style and Civilisation series (begun 1967), which was published by Penguin Books. Under Honour's editorial guidance, the Style and Civilisation series published in quick succession a group of texts that have attained the status of classics, including John Shearman's Mannerism, George Henderson's Gothic, and Linda Nochlin's Realism. Honour's contribution, the highly regarded Neo-Classicism (1968), single-handedly resuscitated the scholarly reputation of the period, which been despised or ignored during the modernist ascendancy. Romanticism, Honour's companion to Neo-Classicism, was published in 1979, long after the demise of the series. In exceptionally good condition.
