Octavo, pictorial wrappers. First U.S. edition. Equinox / Avon 23929. Actually, this is the American edition of NEW WORLDS 7, published by Sphere Books in 1974. The twenty-five selections in this issue, all published here for the first time, consist of mostly fiction but include some poetry and criticism. NEW WORLDS: THE SCIENCE FICTION QUARTERLY was a paperback anthology edited by the staff of NEW WORLDS following the magazine's demise in 1970 (there was a subscriber's only issue, number 201, published in March 1971). NEW WORLDS was the dominant British science fiction magazine of the 1960s and since about 1956, is considered by some to be "the most significant and relevant of all SF magazines." - Mike Ashley. The paperback anthology, devoted to publishing "speculative fiction," managed to survive for ten issues (1971-1976), first as a quarterly, then irregular. After the sixth issue, Michael Moorcock handed over the editorship Hilary Bailey; Charles Platt continued as coeditor and M. John Harrison joined the enterprise as "literary editor." This major original anthology series is unjustly neglected -- not even included in the anthology section of the fifth edition of ANATOMY OF WONDER -- and that's a shame. Trade paperback format. A fine copy. (#162106).

Paperback original. First edition (& 1st printing). No 8. After the final (subscribers only) magazine issue NEW WORLDS no 201 in 1970, the title was picked up and continued for ten further ''issues'' as a quarterly paperback original (the first eight from Sphere and a further two from Corgi; the first five edited by Moorcock alone, no six edited by Moorcock with Charles Platt, no 7 by Platt & Hilary Bailey, the remaining three by Hilary Bailey alone) - making ten paperback volumes in all. These paperbacks were numbered 1 - 10. Subsequently when New Worlds continued again as a fanzine/magazine for a few more issues from 1976 (the first numbered 212), these ten paperback issues were considered as no 202 - 211. So this paperback would be considered New Worlds no 209. NF/Fine (unread) copy.
