Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Freiburg (Englisches Seminar), course: Pidgins and Creoles, language: English, abstract: 1. IntroductionNigeria and Papua New Guinea are two of many countries which have adopted English as their main language. But having so many other, substrate languages influencing the development of a English-speaking country, two major pidgin languages developed: Nigerian Pidgin and Tok Pisin. If one wants to compare these two pidgins with each other, it seems almost inevitable to consider their great geographical distance as well as their historical differences. But my intent in this work is not to elaborate on the status and function and development of the two pidgins but on their differences in grammar. Therefore I'll mainly focus on the noun phrase and the verb phrase.2. Morphology2.1Plural marking on nouns in Tok PisinThe majority of the English based Creole and Pidgin languages both at the Atlantic coast and the South Sea waive marking plurality on nouns or rather use it very optionally. Thus, the same applies to Nigerian Pidgin and Tok Pisin. But if there occurs the need to make a clear distinction between singular and plural both pidgins absolutely dispose of a pluralizer. In Tok Pisin the most common way to express plurality is by the use of the particle ol, which at the same time is identical to the third person plural pronoun. Ol, clearly derived from the English 'all', occurs before the noun as opposed to the post-nominal English plural marking suffix -s. (1)Mi lukim dok. (2) Mi lukim ol dok.I saw the dog. I saw the dogs.(Siegel)But according to Geoff P. Smith (2002), ' there is a great deal of variability, and the presence or absence of ol is still somewhat unpredictable' (p 66). This can clearly be seen in the following example, in which only one noun takes the pre-nominal ol although both have plural meaning.(3) Em i stap nau ma(ma) bl' em wokim spia nau em i kam nau ma bl' em wokim ol bet.He stayed, his mother made arrows, he came and his mother made beds.(Smith 2002: 66)Although the particle ol is the dominant plural marker, the pluralizing suffix -s 'has also become a feature of urban Tok Pisin' (Romaine 1992:219). In order to explain the use of the plural -s, Smith adopts from Romaine 'that animacy does have some influence, with a larger proportion of human than animates using the suffix, and that count nouns take -s considerably more often than mass nouns' (p 71). It is also very often found that the plural is doubly marked. 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2005 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: English in Africa, language: English, abstract: In times of the pre-colonial period, contact between English and Nigerian indigenous languages was hardly to recognize. West Africa came into contact with Europeans for the first time in the 15th century. The Britons were - in contrast to the Spanish and Portuguese - latecomers to the African scene, which is why the Nigerian languages did not have been influenced by the English language until the beginning of the colonial period. The unification of Nigeria in 1914 marked the starting point of her colonization. Since that point in time, contact between English and the major Nigerian languages has been increasing. Nigerian Pidgin (NP), which developed as a contact language between English and various indigenous languages, nowadays does no more fit the definition of a Pidgin as a pure contact language, for it is mainly spoken locally and not throughout the whole country. It is neither a creole, because it is not learned natively by children - at least not throughout its whole area of spreading. To give an overview on how English, Nigerian Pidgin, and the three major indigenous languages are currently fighting to gain ground over each other in multilingual Nigeria, is the topic of this paper's first chapter. The role of English in West Africa in general and Nigeria in particular has been examined to a larger extent in the seminar, so here the main focus is laid on NP and the other three major indigenous languages. The second part deals with the altering role of Nigerian Pidgin in terms of literature, interethnic communication, and the mass media. Regarding NP on its way to a wider spread, nowadays it already is a foregone conclusion that this way would be paved with sharp stones - those mostly put down by the administrative and governing institutions in Nigeria. This is why the last large section of this paper concentrates on prospective problems which NP - and the other major languages spoken in Nigeria - will have to cope with in the next decades. To conclude, I am shortly touching on the thoughts and questions which came to my mind while investigating, and writing this paper. 20 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, language: English, abstract: Both English and Nigerian Pidgin do not only occur in the described domains, but in individual contexts such as in the media, especially in the field of music. Considering the linguistic spread of Nigerian Pidgin and English, this thesis will concentrate on the two songs 'Sweet Mother' by Prince Nico Mbarga, published in 1976, and 'I love you' by the twins-duo Peter and Paul Okoye alias 'P-Square', presented to the public in 2009. Due to the fact that both songs are sung by native Nigerians, an overview of the Nigerian Pidgin's characteristics will be given in the beginning, which will then be applied to both songs, taking into account their similarities. In a further step, the songs' differences will be analysed, while the possible ascendancy of Standard British English over Nigerian Pidgin shall be considered at the same time. But before outlining all of these aspects, a brief summary of the current language situation in Nigeria will serve as an introduction to the topic, followed by a historical view on the development of both Nigerian Pidgin and English within this country. 20 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 4.28, , course: ENGLISH EDUCATION, language: English, abstract: Pidgin generally is a simplified means of communication between or among individuals of different cultures or ethnicities. Nigerian pidgin English described as a combination of indigenous language and English. It is a language derived from tile mix of various languages such as Igbo, Edo, Yoruba, Effik etc.In Africa, pidgins found include; Nigerian pidgin, Cameroonian pidgin, Serria Leone Krio etc. Pidgins are mostly inventionist and innovative in nature and because of their spontaneous adaptability, they can be as structured or as unstructured as needed unlike other languages. This is to say that in pidgin, there are no strict rules given in utterances. There are several assumptions by Akande and Salami which say that the urban characters of the university environments are strong factors influencing the students' use and attitudes to Nigerian Pidgin English. They insist that apart from their education, living within the university communities, the students are likely to enact more urban networks that are usually made up of multilingual and multi-cultural contents.Akande argues that Pidgin English could be regarded as a marker of identity and solidarity. It is an inter-ethnic code available to Nigerians, who have no other common language. 36 pp. Englisch.

Primary data are collected through the use of questionnaire with open-ended variables while secondary data collection is from existing literature on the project topic. Likert-type scale arranged in order of 'very significantly', 'significantly', 'neutral', 'insignificantly' and 'very insignificantly' are used to get respondents opinion on the variables. The major research questions are: What are the effects of Nigerian Pidgin on students' performance in English studies Are students allowed to use Nigerian Pidgin in academic works The general objective of the study is to find out the impact of Nigerian Pidgin on students' performance in English studies while the hypotheses posit for the study include:Ho1: There is no significant relationship between Nigerian Pidgin and students' performance in English Studies.Ho2: There is no significant relationship between students' use of Nigerian Pidgin on the outcome of their academic performance. The major results of the study indicate that 94% or the respondents posits that Nigerian Pidgin affects academic performance while the test of hypothesis with a degree of freedom 4 percent indicate that there is a significant relationship between Nigerian Pidgin and students' performance in English studies. The study recommends that the use of Nigerian Pidgin in an academic community such as Junior Secondary School Bwari, Abuja should not be encouraged. The study suggests that a more robust examination on the research topic involving other academic communities be conducted. Besides, a comparative study on the impact of Pidgin on students' performance in other English speaking countries should be carried out in order to investigate how its been handled. 60 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Bachelor Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Communications - Mass Media, grade: A, National Open University of Nigeria, language: English, abstract: In a world of fierce competition and the emergence of the internet as a powerful, borderless medium, gaining and retaining the attention of consumers and customers and persuading them to buy products and services through the broadcast media is becoming more challenging and important. Although advertising has been proven to be effective in providing market information about products and services, its understanding and comprehension by the masses has been questioned consistently. Thus, it is important for advertisers, advertising agencies, and the media to understand the role that languages play in reaching the target market audience with simple market information about products. This research examines audience perception of Pidgin English advertisements in Nigerian broadcast media, using Benin-City as a reference point. The inhabitants of Benin-City municipal are mainly businessmen and women of various ethnic backgrounds, mostly Hausas, Igbos, and Yorubas. Hence, the use of Pidgin English is regarded as the best medium of public interaction and communication in carrying out their daily activities. These people mostly understand the surface structure of communicated messages in Standard English, while several others cannot even comprehend them at all. Hence, this study examines if Pidgin English holds the interest of the audience when used as a vehicle for conveying advertising messages by the advertisers via the broadcast media and also found out if Pidgin English can help decrease misconception and misunderstanding as regards advertised products. It also intends to explore the potential of the Nigerian Pidgin English as a language as a medium of public and mass communication in Nigeria. A survey research method was adopted in the study, and 200 well-structured questionnaires were administered to purposively selected respondents at random. Data gathered was analyzed using frequency counts, and simple percentages. Findings showed that Pidgin English usage in advertisements helps to reduce misconceptions and misunderstandings of advertisement information and also holds the interest of the audience when used as a medium of communication. Based on the findings, it was that the use of Pidgin English in advertisements should be encouraged. The study also recommends further study to find out whether the public would embrace the culture of using Pidgin English more often for broadcast programs and perhaps adopt it as one of the country¿s lingua franca. 84 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch.
