Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Fred J. Maroon (Photographer) (illustrator). The format is approximately 8.375 inches by 10.25 inches. Illustrated endpapers. Inscribed by the photographer on the back of the fep. Inscription reads To Senator Patrick Leahy, A true friend of photography and photographers. With very best wishes. Fred J. Maroon 10/05/99. The content includes Introduction, The First Term, The Committee to Re-Elect the President, The Senate Watergate Hearings, The House Impeachment Hearings, The Final Days. Afterword, and Index. Fred Joseph Maroon (September 24, 1924 - November 5, 2001) was an American photographer who worked in a breadth of photographic categories over his career. A trained architect, he worked in fashion, travel, portraiture, and architectural photography but is best known for his coverage of the Nixon administration before, during and through the Watergate scandal. His photographs of Europe caught the eye of Edward Steichen, the curator of the Museum of Modern Art, for an exhibition called Always the Young Strangers. It was this exhibition that led to Maroon's professional move to photography. Just as Watergate began to break. Maroon realized that something of great significance was taking place and he needed to cover it. The resulting collection begins with Nixon's 1972 reelection campaign and runs through his resignation in 1974. Because of what Maroon described as the "negative and worrisome mood" of the country, he did not allow most of his pictures to be published until 1999, when he brought out The Nixon Years, 1969-1974, White House to Watergate. The Smithsonian did an exhibition of these photographs as well. "This insiders' view of the Nixon presidency through the lens of Fred J. Maroon and the pen of Tom Wicker sheds light on Nixon and this extraordinary and unsettling time."--BOOK JACKET. "Fred Maroon had no way of knowing when he began work on a book project to photograph the new presidency that he would find himself in a unique position to document the events, as they unraveled, of the Watergate crisis. At that time no other outside photographer had been given the kind of access Maroon had to the White House or, later, to the Committee to Re-elect the President. To complete the story of Watergate, Maroon covered the events that followed - the Senate Watergate hearings, the House impeachment hearings, and the final days of the Nixon presidency."--Book jacket. "Most of the 145 duotone photographs in this remarkable portfolio have never been published before; they are the best of the thousands of pictures Maroon took during Nixon's term of office, from his jubilant inauguration in 1969 to his emotional resignation in 1974. The pictures are direct, powerful documents of a disturbing political era."--Book jacket. "The accompanying text by eminent journalist Tom Wicker, who also had first-hand knowledge of the presidency as a columnist for the New York Times, is an objective, insightful narration of the Nixon years."--Book jacket. Thomas Grey Wicker (June 18, 1926 - November 25, 2011) was an American journalist. He was a political reporter and columnist for The New York Times. Patrick Joseph Leahy (born March 31, 1940) is an American politician and attorney who served as a United States senator from Vermont from 1975 to 2023, and also served as the president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 2012 to 2015 and from 2021 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, he chaired the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate Agriculture Committee at various points during his 48-year tenure. Leahy was the third-longest-serving U.S. senator in history. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
