Traduction du roumain par Alain Guillermou de « Maitreyi », paru en 1933 (Première éd. française : Gallimard 1950). Roman autobiographique, l'un des plus célèbres de l'auteur, inspiré par ses rapports avec l'historien de la philosophie indoue Surendranath Dasgupta et sa fille, la poétesse et romancière Maitreyi Devi. Le personnage principal, un ingénieur anglais travaillant aux Indes, rend visite à son supérieur direct, un Bengali, et fait la cour à sa fille. Le père encourage leurs chastes rapports car il en espère un mariage, une institution que l'Anglais abhorre, mais, par contre, il est très désireux de découvrir la version indienne de l'amour platonique. Leur relation étant néanmoins devenue physique, le père devient furieux, chasse l'Anglais et maintient sa fille dans un strict confinement. Celle-ci se résout à avoir des rapports sexuels avec un autre étranger dans l'espoir d'être enceinte et d'obliger dès lors son père à accepter le mariage avec son amant Le roman remporta le Premier prix à un concours réservé aux manuscrits inédits et fut adapté au cinéma en 1988 par Nicolas Klotz, sur un scénario de Jean-Claude Carrière, avec Hugh Grant. Mircea Eliade (Bucarest 1907 Chicago 1986) était un historien des religions, un mythologue, un philosophe et un romancier. Fils de Capitaine et élevé dans l'orthodoxie roumaine, il publie son premier texte, un conte fantastique, en 1921 et, alors qu'il n'a que dix-sept ans, il écrit un texte autobiographique « Le Roman de l'adolescent myope ». Il publie rapidement beaucoup, des nouvelles, des impressions de voyage, des notices littéraires. En 1928, il obtient sa licence de philosophie à l'Université de Bucarest. Collaborant régulièrement au quotidien « Cuvântul », il apprend différentes langues (il en parlera et en écrira couramment cinq et en lira trois autres) et, ayant obtenu une bourse d'un maharadjah, il part à Calcutta où il étudie le sanscrit, rencontre Tagore et devient un adepte du yoga. Rentré en Roumanie en 1931 pour effectuer son service militaire, il est Docteur en philosophie en 1933, devient assistant en logique et métaphysique dans son alma mater et, jusqu'en 1940, y enseigne la philosophie indienne. Il se laisse influencer par les discours nationalistes de l'extrême-droite et adhère au mouvement fasciste et antisémite de la « Garde de Fer », dont il refusera toujours de se désolidariser malgré l'insistance du Roi Carol II une période de sa vie à propos de laquelle il n'émettra jamais de regret et qui le mènera en prison. Libéré après quelques mois, il devient attaché culturel aux ambassades roumaines à Londres en 1940 puis à Lisbonne en 1941. Il vit au Portugal jusqu'en 1945 puis arrive à Paris, où il donne un cours libre sur l'Histoire des religions à l'Ecole des Hautes Etudes. Il commence à écrire directement en français et publie beaucoup, collabore à d'innombrables revues, enseigne à la Sorbonne et, à partir de 1956, à l'Université de Chicago, où il s'installe l'année suivante. En 1961, il fonde avec Ernst Jünger la revue « Antaios » qui va paraître pendant onze ans. Auteur d'une uvre monumentale, il a été fait docteur honoris causa de plusieurs universités aux Etats-Unis, en France et en Angleterre, fut élu en 1975 à l'Académie royale belge de Langue et de Littérature françaises et reçut en 1977 le Prix Bordin de l'Académie française. / Littérature roumaine.
