Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) can be described as a spectrum of abnormal breathing during sleep that may range from primary snoring to hypopneas to periods of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), during which there is complete cessation of breathing.Cessation of breathing for ten seconds or longer are termed apneas. It involves a decrease or complete halt in airflow despite an ongoing effort to breathe. It occurs when the muscles relax during sleep, causing soft tissue in the back of the throat to collapse and block the upper airway. The brain responds to the lack of oxygen by alerting the body, causing a brief arousal from sleep that restores normal breathing. This pattern can occur hundreds of times in one night. The result is a fragmented quality of sleep that often produces an excessive level of daytime sleepiness.Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by recurrent episodes of partial or complete upper airway obstructions during sleep . This manifests as a reduction (hypopnea) in or complete cessation (apnea) of airflow despite ongoing inspiratory efforts resulting in oxygen desaturations and arousals. It is the most common form of sleep- disordered breathing. 68 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -OSA in children is a frequent disease with a 1-4% prevalence rate. It imposes significant morbidity, causing neurobehavioral, cardiovascular and endocrine complications. The impairment of nasal breathing with increased nasal resistance has a well documented negative impact on early childhood maxilla mandibular development making the upper airway smaller and might lead to adult OSA after puberty. Early recognition and prevention of OSA in children is important in order to prevent, or at least minimize, further complications such as neurocognitive, psychologic and facial permanent deformities in adult life. The role of the dentist is essential in diagnosing and referring patients for further evaluation in a sleep laboratory and by an ENT physician. 120 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Dentists can and do play an essential role in the multidisciplinary care of patients with certain sleep related breathing disorders and are well positioned to identify patients at greater risk of SRBD. SRBD can be caused by a number of multifactorial medical issues and are therefore best treated through a collaborative model. Working in conjunction with our colleagues in medicine, dentists have various methods of mitigating these disorders. In children, the dentist's recognition of suboptimal early craniofacial growth and development or other risk factors may lead to medical referral or orthodontic/orthopaedic intervention to treat and/or prevent SRBD. Various surgical modalities exist to treat SRBD. Oral appliances, specifically custom-made, titratable devices can improve SRBD in adult patients compared to no therapy or placebo devices. Oral appliance therapy (OAT) can improve OSA in adult patients, especially those who are intolerant of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Dentists are the only health care provider with the knowledge and expertise to provide OAT.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a serious condition that afflicts a substantial number of individuals. It is characterized by disruption of normal sleep architecture by complete or partial obstruction of respiratory airflow. Airflow obstruction results in a reduction of blood oxygen saturation know as hypoxemia. It produces arousal in an attempt to reopen the airway. These recurring arousals disrupt sleep architecture, which diminishes the quality of sleep. This cycle results in excessive daytime somnolence, which is one of the hallmark features of this disease condition. Excessive daytime somnolence greatly diminishes the quality of life in affected individuals and impacts unfavorably their state of health.
