The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light rubbing and wear to the spine ends, corners and edges. The text pages are clean and bright. "White wrote to a friend that, in autumn 1937, "I got desperate among my books and picked [Malory] up in lack of anything else. Then I was thrilled and astonished to find that (a) The thing was a perfect tragedy, with a beginning, a middle and an end implicit in the beginning and (b) the characters were real people with recognizable reactions which could be forecast. . Anyway, I somehow started writing a book." The novel, which White described as "a preface to Malory", was titled The Sword in the Stone and published in 1938, telling the story of the boyhood of King Arthur. White was also influenced by Freudian psychology and his own lifelong involvement in natural history. The Sword in the Stone was critically well-received and was a Book of the Month Club selection in 1939. " (from Wikipedia).

First Edition
Condition: Fine. First Edition, Second Impression. 8vo, 7 3/4 x 5 inches (196 x 128 mm), half title, title, [4], 677 pp. Half-bound in red morocco with red marbled paper, raised bands, gilt tittle and decorations on spine. Pages bright and supple, binding tight and clean. First edition, second issue, of the single volume of White's Arthurian trilogy in a sharp custom binding. This is the masterful retelling of the saga of King Arthur by T. H. White (1906 -1964). It is a fantasy classic as legendary as Excalibur and Camelot, and a poignant story of adventure, romance, and magic that has enchanted readers for generations. "This ambitious work will long remain a memorial to an author who is at once civilized, learned, witty and humane" (Times Literary Supplement). The version of The Sword in the Stone included in this volume is darker that the one published in 1924 as a stand-alone. White's work was very influential on the writing of future fantasy novelists, including J. K. Rowling who has described White's Wart as "Harry's spiritual ancestor." [The Guardian, "JK (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling / (1966- )"].
