Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. S.E. Hinton began work on The Outsiders when she was a sophomore attending Will Rogers High School in 1964. She would complete the groundbreaking novel as a junior before showing it to the mother of one of her classmates (Donna Bachmann) who in turn passed it on to a friend and published author that encouraged Hinton to send it to her agent. Hinton graduated in 1966 and The Outsiders was published by Viking Press in 1967. This copy of The Lariat '64, Will Rogers High School Yearbook features S.E. Hinton's sophomore photo and was signed by Hinton to Anne Kilgrew (a classmate of Hinton's) the year she began work on The Outsiders: "Anne,/ Espero que tenemos/ un año bueno in la/ clase de español. Amigos par tiempre/ Susita" roughly translated to "I hope we have a good year in Spanish class. Friends forever/ Susie". At some point Kilgrew wrote last names as well as graduation years beside each signature. Next to "Susita" she wrote "Hinton '66". A unique piece during the writing of what BBC News listed as one of "100 Novels That Shaped Our World" in 2019. VG in original plastic sleeve w/ minor bump to head of spine. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of Hinton's first book. Presentation copy, signed and inscribed by Hinton in the year of publication "For Mrs. H.W. Bailey from one of the Outsiders Best wishes, Susie Hinton 1967". The Outsiders was Hinton's first book, written while she was still in high school, and which is centered around two rival gangs divided by their socioeconomic status: the working-class "Greasers" and the upper-middle-class "Socs." Basis for Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 film, starring Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, and Diane Lane. A classic of young adult literature. New York: The Viking Press, 1967. Publisher's original black cloth, spine lettered in bright orange; pp. 188. A near fine or better copy in a near fine, price-intact dust jacket. Binding remains tight, sturdy and square with hardly any shelfwear to boards. Offsetting to front pastedown and flyleaf, else internally clean. Jacket shows minor general shelfwear with just a hint of toning, lower corner of the front flap neatly clipped. Protected in archival mylar and housed in a custom painted case. Inscribed by Author(s).
First printing. Signed first edition of this enduring YA classic, adapted into an equally classic and enduring film directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring a who's-who of about-to-be-huge 1980s stars (Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, etc.). Written while she was still in high school and published when she was just eighteen, Hinton's OUTSIDERS is set in her native Tulsa and follows the wrong-side-of-the-tracks Greasers and their rich "Westside" rivals, the Socs. Told from the point of view of fourteen-year-old Greaser Ponyboy Curtis, the book's frank depiction of class conflict and teenage violence marked a turning point in young adult literature toward realism and away from the idealization of youth typical of previous generations. As Hinton herself wrote at the time of the book's publication: "Teenagers today want to read about teenagers today. The world is changing, yet the authors of books for teen-agers are still 15 years behind the times. In the fiction they write, romance is still the most popular theme with a horse and the girl who loved it coming in a close second. Nowhere is the drive-in social jungle mentioned. In short, where is the reality?" But that reality came at a price. Despite its status as a classic and its appeal across generations, the book remains among the most frequently challenged books in the United States. Increasingly elusive in the first printing and uncommon signed. An attractive copy of this YA landmark. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Publisher's original pictorial boards (Viking "Library Binding" variant, no priority). In original color pictorial jacket designed by Richard M. Powers; top flap corner clipped, but lower price ($3.77) intact. Red topstain. 188 pages. Inscribed by Hinton on title page: "To Kelly - / Stay Gold! / S.E. Hinton." Viking sticker to spine base and lower front panel, as issued. Minor toning, rubbing to jacket. Two small closed tears at bottom of spine. Some faint damping to underside of jacket at spine and flap, very unobtrusive. Book has slight lean, single school stamp to front endpaper. Else clean and sound throughout. Presents beautifully. Very good plus in a very good jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Bound in black cloth with faded red lettering on the spine. Black is ever so slightly faded on the spine, and like all black cloth some dust shows on the cover, but overall very clean. Binding good and tight. No date on the title page. Copyright page dated only 1967, with no mention of edition. (From all er can gather, later printings do seem to indicate which printing it is; only the first edition does not state.) 188 pages. The bottom of the last printed page has two chips, half-dime sized closed tears that have folded triangular back on themselves. All else clean throughout. This copy has a cut signature from the Author, S.E. Hinton mounted on the front free endpaper and dated 2004. It seems to be taken from the title page of a paperback edition of Hinton's Hawkes Harbor, and is folded and mounted here with photo corners in such as way as only to show the signature and date -- but the book itself is 1967. The Outsiders was (and remains) an important and controversial YA book, often banned, more-often assigned and read. Scarce in the first edition, since the author was unknown at the time. It was issued in this black cloth with DJ (ours does not have DJ) and also in library edition with printed illustrations on cover and spine. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book. Signed by Author(s).
