Boston and New York. Houghton Mifflin Company. 1934. First American Edition. Octavo (8 x 5 1/2). [8], [1-2] 3-213 [214-216] pp. Illustrated by Kurt Wiese. Ki-yu's text is identical to the text published in the 1934 first edition titled Panther by Jonathan Cape, London, with the exception of a Preface written by Haig-Brown for Panther that wasn't published in Ki-yu. The Preface penned by Haig-Brown was in response to a critic's charge in the U.K. who thought there was too much violence and therefore the book unfit for a younger audience. Ki-yu was published a week later than Panther and the Life of Editions Record at Harold Ober Associates shows there were 1,605 copies sold, with the book going out of print in 1950. The book is bound in an early binding state of beige cloth with orange titles on the spine and front cover and with Ki-yu's image in orange and black on the front cover. Orange end papers. There is a small marginal stain at the bottom edge of a few pages at the back of the book, and the spine title is dulled, otherwise this is a very good book.
Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Lee-Elliott, Theyre (illustrator). A clean, unmarked book with a tight binding. 191 pages. Red paper-covered boards. 4 7/8" w x 7 1/2"h. Tears on worn dust jacket. Previous owner's name blacked out on pastedown endpaper. The tale of a particular panther in Vancouver - biting, snarling, hunting, mating, killing, and dying. Illustrations by Theyre Lee-Elliott. Signed by Roderick Haig-Brown on the title page. Signed by Author.

Condition: fine. 1st American Edition. [vi],214pp. Octavo. First American edition. Bound in the original illustrated buff cloth with orange lettering stamped to the spine. Dark orange endpapers. Illustrated with line drawings throughout the text. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Top edge of text block slightly dust darkened. The original illustrated dust jacket has not been price clipped, but does have some edgewear. Approximately 1" of the tail of the jacket's spine is missing and a 1/2" chip is missing from the head; several closed tears starting along the edges, but the jacket has retained its vivid colours. Overall, a near fine copy with a good to very good dust jacket. Cave A 18. With illustrations throughout the text by Kurt Wiese, this is a very good copy of this scarce Haig-Brown book with the even scarcer dust jacket.

Boston and New York. Houghton Mifflin Company. 1934. First Edition. [10], 3-213 [214-216] pp. In my bibliography of the books written and published by Roderick Haig-Brown, I described four binding states of Ki-yu and thought at the time I had nailed the total; but I didn't, and clearly missed this one. This book is bound in cream colored cloth with orange titles on the spine and a silhouette in orange showing a panther with black muzzle markings. So now there are at least five binding states. By the way, picking the order of issue of these bindings is a fool's errand. To my eye, this is the most attractive binding yet seen. The book is clean, bright and in fine condition.

London. Jonathan Cape. 1934. First Edition. Octavo (8 x 5). 257 pp. Roderick Haig-Brown's compelling story of a Vancouver Island cougar, or mountain lion, Ki-yu . One of the finest animal biographies published. The 1934 British Panther is a rare book - and in this case this same book has come back to me after more than a decade since I sold it (by the way, handling the same book once every 10 years is a good way to define a rare book). The U. K. Panther first edition was published two weeks before the American edition titled Ki-yu was published in the states. There are two states of the binding in the 1934 Panther - the first in green cloth with yellow titles and the second, this one, bound in red cloth with black titles on the spine - it was issued in 1937 and was in print for a short period of time. White and yellow printed dust jacket. The book is very good (small stain on spine) in a near very good dust jacket with some soiling and a stain.

First Edition. London. Jonathan Cape. 1934. First Edition. Octavo (8 x 6). 257 pp. Roderick Haig-Brown's compelling story of a Vancouver Island cougar; it's one of the finest animal biographies published. The 1934 British Panther is a rare book. You will see dozens of copies of the first American edition of the same book, titled Ki-yu: A Story of Panthers, before you'll encounter the first U. K. Panther (and Ki-yu is by no means a common book, published in Boston in 1934). Panther was published two weeks before Ki-yu, and it's by far the most difficult of Haig-Brown's books to to locate. There's no record at Harold Ober and Associates (Haig-Brown's literary agent) in New York showing the number of copies sold. The book is bound in green cloth with yellow titles on the spine and front cover. The dust jacket is printed in black and yellow. The book is clean and very good in a near very good dust jacket with age toning and a chip at the head of the spine panel.

Boston and New York. Houghton Mifflin Company. 1934. First Edition. [10], 3-213 [214-216] pp. With an interesting, signed inscription by Haig-Brown in the year of publication to "The Sheriff / Roderick L. Haig-Brown / Dec. 1934 / A pleasant meeting" on the front fly leaf. Ki-yu is Roderick Haig-Brown's intimate story of Vancouver Island panthers (or cougars or mountain lions, if you like), Blackstreak and Nassa and their cub, Ki-yu. These panthers roamed at the northern tip of Vancouver Island, and sometimes weigh as much as 250 pounds - powerful and fearless and who hunt deer and elk and only occasionally attack cattle and raid chicken coops. It is Ki-yu who grows to be the largest and most powerful and fearless of panthers as he ranges over the Plateau and the Wapiti Valley. And it is the story of the ranchers who fear him and seek to kill him. Haig-Brown studied panthers under the watchful eye of John Cecil Smith, the greatest of Vancouver Island panther hunters. Roderick Haig-Brown's story is based on first-hand experience, his own and Mr. Smith's. The book is bound in beige cloth with orange titles on the spine and a silhouette in orange showing a panther with black muzzle markings. Pictorial dust jacket. The book is clean and fine and the jacket is very good with light edge wear and chips with a bit of restoration on the spine panel. Signed by Author.
