IL volume racconta il delicato intervento di restauro condotto dall'Opificio delle Pietre Dure sui primi otto affreschi staccati delle storie della Genesi, appartenenti al lato est del Chiostro Verde di Santa Maria Novella a Firenze, opere di Paolo Uccello e dei suoi collaboratori. Purtroppo le storie della Genesi sono giunte ai nostri giorni afflitte da gravi problemi conservativi causati da molteplici fattori, fino alla disastrosa alluvione del 1966. Si tratta di uno dei piĆ estesi cicli noti di argomento veterotestamentario, sempre celebrato dalla letteratura artistica per la presenza di uno dei principali maestri del Quattrocento fiorentino: Paolo Uccello (1397-1475), che qui ha lasciato uno dei suoi indiscussi capolavori, Il Diluvio Universale. La particolare tecnica esecutiva delle storie della Genesi, una pittura prevalentemente a monocromo verdeterra, indusse nel Settecento il frate domenicano Vincenzo Borghigiani a definirle dipinte "a sugo d'erbe e terra verde": proprio dal colore dominante di queste pitture trae origine il nome del Chiostro Verde.
