Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. The Penitent, the story of Joseph Shapiro, is Singer's latest novel. Originally published in Yiddish as Der Baal Tshuve, the novel was immediately recognized by its readers as one of Singer's most serious, and perhaps finest, works. The story begins with Joseph Shapiro's rapid climb to prosperity in postwar America, his quick plunge into promiscuity, and his subsequent flight to Israel. He wants to escape from his unfaithful wife, Celia; his nagging mistress, Liza, and her money-mad daughter, Mickie. On the plane he has a comic encounter with the attractive Priscilla, who reappears later in the tale. On his arrival in Tel Aviv he finds that much of modern Israel is little more than is little more than an extension of America: worship of the Golden Calf is worldwide. Only in the orthodox section of Jerusalem, Meah Shearim, does Shapiro begin to find salvation. As a Jew without faith, he has difficulty at first participating in prayer and ritual; the Evil Spirit tells him. "You are play acting." Gradually he is convinced of the genuine superiority of the traditional Jewish way of life through the simplicity and generosity of the people among whom he has come to live. There is very minor wear and tear to the book jacket.
